This winter, I have been seeking rich, cold-weather spice flavors in my cocktails. Allspice Dram is a great place to start for a spicy cocktail, and just a bit of this powerful liqueur is all you need. This cocktail then turns to Aperol for some complexity. If you’re familiar with Campari, think of Aperol as it’s younger sister. Lighter on the aromatics, it’s a delightful blend of bitter orange and herbs. I like to use gin as the main spirit, as it provides a botanical base that is refreshing and reminiscent of a crisp winter morning. Adding some freshly squeezed cara cara orange juice brings out the orange in the Aperol and provides some sweetness. Some additional brown sugar brings the sweetness to the perfect level with just a touch of molasses flavor.
Ingredients
1 1/2 ounce gin
3/4 ounce Aperol
1/3 ounce Allspice Dram
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
1 teaspoon brown sugar
Instructions
- Shake all ingredients over ice.
- Strain and serve in a chilled cocktail glass.
Notes
I recommend cara cara oranges. To quickly chill a cocktail glass, just fill it with water and ice before you mix your drink then toss the water right before serving.
